Home Care and Maintenance

HOME CARE AND MAINTENANCE

Furniture
Please use a product like Pledge, Endust, a damp cloth or a feather duster to clean all stained wood pieces.

Use a damp cloth (but avoid using any commercial cleaning products) on the following:

  • Leather chair
  • Suede Headboards and chairs

Please do not use abrasive cleaners on any of the above furniture.

Plastic Blinds
Vacuum with a soft brush attachment or use a feather duster or a damp cloth with a mild cleaner.

Artwork and Mirrors
Mirrors and the glass on artwork may be cleaned with Windex. Paintings can be lightly cleaned with a feather duster. Mirror and artwork frames may be cleaned with Endust, a damp cloth or a feather duster.

Upholstery
All upholstered items must be professionally dry-cleaned:

  • Sofas and throw pillows, Loveseats and throw pillows
  • Bench seats
  • Lounge chair cushions
  • Dining chairs

Lampshades
Vacuum with soft brush attachment or use a feather duster.

Bedding & Shower Curtains
The cotton blankets can be machine washed in warm or cold water and machine dried. The following items need to be professionally dry-cleaned:

  • All dust skirts
  • All comforters and pillow shams
  • All shower curtains

IF any of the above items are machine washed and dried, shrinking may occur.

Carpet Care
Suggested items to utilize for spots and spills:

  • Mix a detergent solution of ¼ teaspoon (no more!) of clear, non-bleach liquid dishwashing detergent such as Dawn, Joy or clear Ivory to a quart of water in a clean spray bottle.
  • A solution of white vinegar and water (1 part vinegar to 4 parts water)
  • Non-oily polish remover
  • An aerosol chewing gum remover
  • A volatile, non-flammable solvent such as dry cleaning fluid.

General Instructions
Prompt attention to spots and spills is essential. Remove solids from a spill by gently scraping with a spoon or dull knife. Quickly absorb as much liquid as possible by blotting with white paper or cloth towels and replacing them as they become saturated. Always blot; never scrub or rub abrasively as a fuzzy area my result.  When blotting, work from the outer edge in toward the center of the spot to avoid spreading the spill and enlarging the problem. After removing the spot, a final rinse by spraying with cool clean water and blotting is necessary to remove detergent residue that may become sticky and cause rapid re-soiling. The nature of fibers to absorb water without feeling damp makes it critical to remove all excess moisture.  To absorb any remaining moisture from the carpet, place a half-inch layer of white paper towels over the spot and apply pressure. Change towels as they become wet and repeat as necessary until the carpet is only slightly damp. On the damp area, put more towels weighted down with a heavy non-staining object such as a plastic milk jug filled with water, and leave overnight.

Spot Cleaning
These instructions are the suggested methods to use to remove a particular spot, but may not be able to remove the entire problem without harm to the carpet. For further assistance with specific stain removal procedures, push the Lodging at you Service button on your phone.

Water soluble stains
Absorb as much as possible with white paper towels.  Blot the stained areas with white paper towels dampened with cool water until there is no more transfer of the stain onto the towels.  If any of the stain remains, the detergent solution mentioned above should be spray lightly on to the spot and blotted repeatedly with white paper towels, working from the outer edge in toward the center of the spot to avoid spreading.  Rinse thoroughly by spraying with clean water and blotting.  Again, do not use too much detergent since the residue will contribute to rapid re-soiling. OR, use the same treatment as above, but also treat with a white vinegar solution before using the detergent solution.

Grease stains
Absorb as much as possible with white paper towels. Apply the volatile solvent, which was described previously, to towels or a spotting cloth and blot.  Use sparingly!  Do not pour or spray directly on the carpet pile as damage to the carpet backing or adhesive underneath may result.  Apply the solvent to the towels to transport it to the carpet. Repeat as much as necessary.  Protective gloves should be worn because the solvent will quickly remove oils from the skin and may result in skin irritation.  Provide adequate ventilation!  Do not use flammable solvents.  Follow with procedures under ‘water soluble stains’.

Freeze – chewing gun and candle wax
Chewing gun and candle wax with ice wrapped in plastic or a commercially available product in an aerosol can.  Shatter with a blunt object and vacuum or sweep up chips while still brittle.  Follow this with procedure listed under 'grease stains’.

WARNING!
Certain products found in most homes can cause irreparable damage to your carpet, such as bleaches, tile cleaners, and mildew removers.  Oven cleaners and drain openers are very strong chemicals that can discolor and dissolve carpet fibers. Acne medications containing benzoyl peroxide, a very powerful bleach, are capable of permanently damaging your carpet and most other fabrics as well.
